What is Boccia?

Boccia is a Paralympic precision ball sport, similar in concept to bowls or pétanque. Players throw, kick, or use a ramp to propel leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball called the jack. It has been a Paralympic sport since 1984.

The sport is designed for athletes with significant physical disabilities affecting motor function, including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and spinal injuries. Athletes compete while seated and may use assistive devices such as ramps to deliver the ball. Boccia can be played individually, in pairs, or in teams of three.

Disability Sport NI & the NI Boccia League

Disability Sport NI is the lead development agency for Boccia in Northern Ireland and a member of Boccia UK. They oversee 12 clubs throughout Northern Ireland catering to players who meet Paralympic classification standards, offering both recreational and competitive play.

The Northern Ireland Boccia Pairs Championship runs from October to June each year, with monthly matches at venues across Northern Ireland. Teams of 2–4 players with physical disabilities compete throughout the season. There is also a Northern Ireland Individual Boccia Championship running alongside the pairs competition.

A National Performance Centre operates at Ulster University, Jordanstown, supporting elite athletes through the Boccia UK World Class Athlete Performance Pathway towards international representation.
